Mosin Nagant Length - The Mosin Nagan M44 carbine is a Russian-Soviet long-cover carbine chambered in 7.62x54R. Here is a short description of the Mosin M1891 with a long 91/30s. While the M38 was produced from 1938-45, the M44 was a late WWII modification that was only produced in Russia from 1944-48. Other communist countries and Soviet states also produced variants of the M44. The main difference with the M44 is the use of a fixed side folding bayonet instead of the disposable style that comes with most Mosins. In short: the effect can range from pretty and bad to good. For its time, the M44 was an example of the rifle design of the late 1800s. If you have the patience to adjust the drive clips, install the circuit breaker if you're bored, and polish the trigger, it can be a a good gun. Just remember that the Mosin will never be a Mauser or a Lee Enfield: it's an inferior tool by comparison, but that's why we like them.

Since this is such a big difference, I thought I would give it a separate section. The side folding bayonet system of the M44 is very similar to the SKS, which was developed at the same time. Pull back the arm, turn the bayonet and lock it on the barrel. The bayonet tube that comes on the barrel, together with the back, provides a secure attachment. The style of this bayonet requires that it be attached and attached to the wooden mat.
Despite the end of the bayonet, the top of the shield is still attached, and on some models it can be caught on clothes and a little annoying. It would be nice if they designed the wood a little taller or made it a little bigger so it wouldn't be so easy. But, it will be very useful in times of war: no bayonet + attachment to carry on the belt, and very fast to attach.

Fortunately, 7.62x54R has a good selection these days. You can get cheap, diluted, premium, or you can get commercial hunting ammo, whatever. If you shoot, you can make nice, soft bullets of the right size, but I recommend buying factory ammo. Currently in Canada (as of 2021) ammo costs about 43 cents per round, but Barnaul's new production (including soft bullets suitable for hunting) costs approx. and $0.72. Each US if you buy with Wolf, MFS and CPU is about $1/cycle. The low cost of factory ammo makes reloading difficult to justify.

In one of my first articles on the Mosin Nagant, I said that it is the cheapest gun to go hunting. Those prices are long gone, and the M44 is more expensive, so it's not cheap anymore. You should only hunt with the M44 if you really like shooting and your shots are up to 200 yards depending on your marksmanship. A rifle chambered for 7.62x54R is fairly easy to find these days, but the safety is poor and there are more powerful hunting rifles available for $900.
The only downside is the price and what else you can buy for that money right now. It is very easy to get a Lee Enfield bushing or #4 mk1 carbine for the M44 and I would argue that the Lee is faster and easier to load.
