Almost seven years later we were introduced to the next generation in the Glock lineup The differences in Gen 5 are simple enough on the surface, but there are some interesting changes that aren't immediately obvious
I've been using my Gen 5 Glock 19 since late August and have put about 4,000 rounds through it since then. I've run it with static accuracy and in strong self-defense exercises from hiding and without light attached to the rail. I've spent time taking it apart (as Glocks are fun tools) to learn about internal modifications and parts replacement issues.

For the most part, the Gen 5 Glock 19 is just a Glock 19, but there are some interesting and unusual changes that warrant inspection. There are also caveats that first-time buyers should be aware of I hope to cover most of them here, but keep in mind that this knowledge is based on less than 2 months of use, several times a week. The first and best reason to consider this pistol is that it is a Glock 19; Arguably the best rifle ever It offers accurate performance and large magazine capacity while being large enough to be a duty rifle and small and light enough for everyday concealed carry.
Additionally, one cannot ignore the excellent reliability record provided by Glock pistols. From my own experience, I have fired over 100,000 rounds through Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glock pistols and the only malfunctions I have had are due to Glock parts failure and faulty Cerakote work. With stock parts, Glock pistols are nearly flawless, even in rough conditions
Meet The Glock 19 Gen5: How Good Of A 9mm Gun Is It?
Specific to the Gen 5, you may consider the Glock 19 for several primary reasons First, the slide lock lever is now double-sided So if you're left-handed, switch the mag version to the right and you have the perfect left-handed pistol. For those of you who like Glock pistols, but not for finger grips, the Gen 5 comes with a flat front strap. No customization required
Gen 5 brings very little that is new to shooting, with 2 notable exceptions The Glock 19 has always been a smooth shooting pistol, easy to handle and has always had an accuracy that will beat 99.9% of shooters. New in this application is the new gen bar barrel and flat grip front
After shooting a lot with the Gen 1 and Gl 2 Glocks, I noticed a lack of thumb grips I'm used to the squeezing grip filling my strong hands and now it feels different. I don't find the difference to be bad, but since the finger holes fit my hand perfectly and I miss them on this pistol. I know many people never liked them, so many will be happy with this change

The new gun profile is claimed to be twice as accurate at long range (4" group at 50 yards, Glock claims) I have yet to qualify a 4" group at 50 yards, but I found that my group at 25 yards was much smaller. Compared to the Gen 4 and my shooting Gen 4. I can't say for sure, but I would think it's due to the more accurate barrel.
The Gen 3 trigger is probably a better feel than the Gen 4, but that's subjective and hard for me to say. The Gen 5 trigger assembly is completely different from the Gen 4, being configured like a Glock 43. It has a "Newark" trigger that uses a polymer spring support and a compression spring (connecting the bar to the cross bar instead of an expansion spring..) I tried the connector 3.5lb and I didn't notice a difference in press weight. So I tried the 2lb connector and got the 4.5lb press that I expect in my pistol. This is interesting
Most of the 9mm ammo I've used in pistols is 115gr ball, but I've used the Federal Premium 147gr Hydra-Shock JHP range, Spear Gold Dot 124gr +P GDHP, Federal Premium 124gr HST JHP, Hornady. Critical Defense 115gr, and Hornady Critical Duty 135gr… both in perfect condition.
I have no experience with my Gen 5 Glock 19 with ~4,000 rounds. The only odd issue I can report is that within the first 1000 rounds I felt a slight hesitation at times when the first phase of the magazine was engaged. Instead of the usual "chic" sound/feel of a slide on battery, there was an occasional "ka-chunk" that felt like a slight hesitation with a round chamber. After about 1000 rounds the problem disappeared and never affected the rifle's performance. Chambered around the room and fired.

Like any other Glock pistol, the transition from trigger to grip on the Gen 5 G19 is angular and generally uncomfortable for the middle finger of the hand during shooting. Therefore, I recommend that every Glock pistol must have a Dremel tool along and below the trigger guard to create a smooth and tapered profile. Other than this version, the Glock 19 is adequate There are others who think the G19 or any Glock pistol is fine without this little adjustment work. I find the Gen 5 Glock 19 very comfortable with this adjustment Without it, it cannot be used I, personally, would not own a Glock that was not modified in this way It would definitely make a nice upgrade to the Gen 6
The Glock 19 is not fast and is very easy to maneuver again The magazine release location is perfect and I only have to manipulate it a little bit to keep my average sized hand on fire (as I do with every pistol). Even with the small Glock slide lock lever, my grip often interferes with the lever, and I find that the pistol doesn't open frequently with the last round in the magazine. This is not the gun's fault in any way It's all mine
Although compact, the Glock 19 is larger than others in the category However, with a good and well-designed holster, it is easily hidden on your belt, inside the waist or outside. I carry an illuminated Glock 19 in the attached position every day and never have a printing problem
Remember, however, that concealability is largely controlled by the holster and its structure Most holsters made for concealed carry do not help conceal the pistol Be careful!
Glock 19 Gen 5 W/weapon Light
The Glock 19's fifteen-plus-one capacity is plenty, especially for a compact. It's no mistake that the Glock 19 sets the standard for size-capacity ratio in the pistol world.
The essentially uncoated Gen 5 Glock 19 slide comes in Melonite Black treated with an nDLC coating. The result is a darker and, more durable finish I really like this new finish and the beauty it offers I can't say if it's more durable or not I can say, however, that repeatedly dropping it on gravel in training will scratch the slide and remove some of the finish, as seen here:

The polymer frame is very similar to the Gen 4, except that the sides are slightly flared to simulate a magwell (just an imitation) and the front pressure fingers are gone. Gen 5 has only one pin near the locking point instead of the usual 2 pins for current generations. Perhaps because of this change, the frame is slightly wider and slightly longer than the Gen 4, the grip is the same as the Gen 4 and can be used, unless you have wet or bloody hands (so, make sure you have a grip. If you have a gun Glock).
