Page from "JAN #1 Joint Army-Navy Publication UNIFORMS AND INSIGNIA Prepared by Military Intelligence and Naval Intelligence," a recognition manual issued by the United States War Department during World War II for use in the field by U.S. combat forces .

This cumulative military manual was a "Joint Army-Navy" ("JAN") publication showing the uniforms and insignia of the Navy, Army and Air Force of Japan, Nazi Germany (Heer/Armata German, Kriegsmarine/German Navy, Luftwaffe/German Air Force, elite the Waffen-SS/German Army Guard), fascist Italy, occupied France and the Netherlands (parts of their fleets were stationed in the western allied countries), neutral fascist Spain and Portugal, and allied Turkey. The plate collection was published as an unclassified public record of the US government in 1943-44, in a loose-leaf pocket binder format that allows for additional pages and corrections. Today it is in the public domain with no known copyright restrictions.
